I'm trying to join the 4.8 million who've downloaded Skype. My friend is using it to call successfully using a DSL service. When we try to talk, the audio portion comes through from him to me clearly but when I speak into the headset connected to the sound card in my Dell Dimension runnin XP Home and my Direcway satellite service, there is a lag of as long as 15 seconds for him to hear my voice. Worse still, it is broken up in pieces like a bad cell phone call. Direcway user support was unable to help (advice - try again later). I'm running McAfee firewall as well. Skype claims to be unaffected by firewalls. Any ideas on what to look at in either XP settings, Direcway settings, etc. Thanks Charles charlier at disqworks dot com

I am not familiar with Skype, but I have used a number of VoIP solutions with Direway with varying levels of success/failure. As a general statement, you are fighting two significant problems. First is upload speed, and the second is satellite latency. Satellite latency with 4000/6000 consumer products is a variable between 700ms and 2000ms. It would be extremely unlikely that you would experience 15 second latency due to the connection directly, because everything would timeout before that happened. A number of VoIP solutions compensate for poor speeds by the use of buffering and compression. It may well be that the Skype solution reacts to the poor speed by extreme buffering, and is delaying your outbound voice by a huge amount as a result. If that's the case, there is essentially nothing you can do about it. I currently use Net2Phone. When I was a regular 4000 user it was essentially usable only in emergency situations (I am a mobile user, so it is possible I could be in an emergency where I had satellite, but no phone service). Inbound quality was decent, outbound was poor, and latency was typically about 2 seconds. I am now on an expensive (repeat, expensive - you could do it to if money is no _object_) business-class Direcway service that has consistent latency around 750ms and upload speeds in the 100K range. With this, Net2Phone works extremely well. I've had hour-long conversations with people in other countries at low cost, and once they learn the proper pattern of speak/wait it is quite acceptable. Bottom line is that you are unlikely to ever be happy with *any* VoIP solution on regular Direcway satellite service. Don, Thanks for the explanation. Are you saying that both people talking at the same time could be part of the problem? Charlie

Thanks for the explanation. Are you saying that both people talking at the same time could be part of the problem? Doesn't help, but even if they don't, the one on satellite it going to have problems.
