I've found the native SIP client on the Nokia N800 (Maemo 2008) to be OK, as long as you use a headset or mic+earbud adapter that comes with the N800. Also, I was using a dedicated wifi access point over which I had exclusive control, without any interference, and connected just 20ms away from the SIP endpoint, so performance was not an issue.
