: :I suspect that one problem is the size of the disk that comes with : :exchanges such as System X. All the billing data is dumped to that, : :and then downloaded to a remote site periodically (every hour, I : :think) over X.25. BT insist, however, that they musn't lose any : :billing data, even if their comms _link_s go down for a long period ( : :1day?) - this effectively limits the amount of data that can : hysically be stored, and hence the 10 unit restriction. : : This is interesting! How weird to think that BT could lose their : comms to the central record office whilst keeping the exchange : running - you'd think they'd have several backup routes. If the : phones are still up enough for there to be anything worth billing, : the _link_ should be too. Anyway even if they did then the only calls which could be made would be own exchange calls. So less data would be being generated, it is number of calls, rather than their duration which matter so far as logging is concerned.

: BT would almost certainly have to install a very large amount of extra : mass storage in order to log every all to provide fully itemised : bills. Mercury can manage it because they have far fewer customers : (probably one or two orders of magnitude) which means they do not have : to store as much data. : : As far as I remember (uk.telecom, around 12 months ago), BT *do* keep records : of *all* calls made, on mass storage, so a reason for not giving fully : itemised billing could either be that they want to save paper, or they don't : trust their system.. There is one easy way to get a fully itemised bill on a digital exchange. enter *411#, then put the phone down. This has a couple of problems, a) it rings you back and tells you straight away, b) it costs about 5p a call) (when you get fed up enter #411#) I guess the logic is something like if (charge_advice || (call-units 10) call-itemise=TRUE;

: : I'm not sure if charge band is decided on-line by the exchange, or : off-line by the billing software - if off line, then all of the : destination number would need to be logged in order to work it out - : in which case BT do have all the details to produce itemised bills. I think it must be possible for chargeband calculation to be done by the exchange, since how else would charge advice work. (also to decide if the call record would be needed for itemisation, if what goes on the disk is in fact selective) Mercury exchanges, or at least 021-624 xxxx, do not support charge advice, so can do all the calculations on another system. Also this should simplify the exchange software, to a simple stick call record on output queue The starting time, duration, source and desination numbers are not huge amounts of data, say 32 bytes a record.

I'm not sure if charge band is decided on-line by the exchange, or off-line by the billing software - if off line, then all of the destination number would need to be logged in order to work it out - in which case BT do have all the details to produce itemised bills. As I understand it, the exchange decides ON line for direct dial calls, indeed it HAS to because you could have invoked call charge advice. It can decide OFF line for calls involving extra sophisticated features. Having determined the cost on-line, the exchange software adds it onto a totalling register associated with the calling line, IF the total cost is under 10 meter units. If over, it holds it and makes a special billing record for later processing. Charge advice announces the charge before any Options discounts are applied, by the way. TB Could anybody explain what modifications BT would need to carry out in TB order to supply the residential customer with a fully itemised bill? Somewhere they have a statement in their code which says something like if(size_of_call10) printf(call_details); Remove the if statement.
