I want to know how all these unresponsive comments are indications of hypocracy on the part of Democrats. It was addressing something else entirely that wasn't anywhere in the line related to patriotism and claims about military service. It really has to do with the Republican attacks on Kerry's service. You bring Obama and Biden into the mix when neither have questioned the patriotism of anyone's military service.  Neither are on either side of the Bush/Kerry fence.  Why is this a Democrat/Republican issue? Look, I don't believe Bush joined the Air National Guard to further his political aspirations.  I don't believe he thinks that far ahead. I think he wanted to fly fighter jets without risking his life in Vietnam.  Vietnam was a horrible war.  I have a cousin on agent orange disability from that war.  No sane person wanted to go to Vietnam but many people went.  They didn't have people with the political strings, money for college, or, like me, abilities that let me select a carrier field that guaranteed I wouldn't go. Nor do I believe Kerry went to Vietnam to further is political aspirations.  I believe Kerry is an idealist.  I think he volunteered for Vietnam because we were fighting there and someone had to go.  During the Bush/Kerry election a coworker put up a picture of him shaking Kerry's hand.  I asked him how he rated. He said he too was a Silver Star holder.  They don't hand out Silver Stars like candy.  The soft spoken people can surprize you. The Kerry/Bush issue isn't one of Republicans vs Democrats but about honor and dishonor.  That political hacks got involved just shows the depth of dishonor some will go to. I voted for Nixon.  Boy was I stupid.  The Nixon enemies list is still with us.  I wish we hadn't had him to kick around anymore. Have you at long last no shame?

It makes little difference if a pilot checked the box.  During war one does not need to volunteer.  Many from the 147th did go to Nam.

  But there was no chance Bush's unit would be ordered overseas. None from Bush's unit went but many from the 147th did.  Most of those were taken as F102 pilots and trained on the replacement F106.  Point is that it wasn't up to Bush whether he went or not.  His unit wasn't picked but numerous others were and it had nothing to do with flying F102's.
