I'm currently paying Bell $28.50 for a land line that has one service (call answer). Taxes are $4, making the total come to $32.50. Naturally any long distance costs are extra, but sometimes I make no chargable calls for a given billing period. Rough guess is that I'm paying an average of $5 per month for long distance calls, making the Bell service about $34 + tax per month. Vonage basic plan is $20, it includes a form of call answer, and I'd basically never be paying for chargable calls. So I'd save $14 per month with Vonage. Is that worth it? Maybe. Besides Vonage, what are my options for a VOIP service provider? Is there a monthly fee tacked on for equiment rental, or bogus charges like network access fee ?

Vonage basic plan is $20, it includes a form of call answer, and I'd basically never be paying for chargable calls. So I'd save $14 per month with Vonage. Is that worth it? Maybe. Besides Vonage, what are my options for a VOIP service provider? Is there a monthly fee tacked on for equiment rental, or bogus charges like network access fee ? Vonage is 19.99 + tax - that's all you get charged. Keep an eye open for discounts/promotions on hardware, you can often get the VoIP adapter for free after rebate/service credit. Primus is another alternative ... people who use them seem happy with the service. I've been using vonage for ~3 years now and I think service has been great.

Vonage is to VoIP what Bell is to POTS. Sometimes you can get their ATA (a D-_link_ box where you plug a regular phone on one side and ethernet on the other) on special at Future Shop and re-provision it to another VoIP provider instead of activating it which locks it to Vonage. I seem to be grandfathered into the Province plan that they once had, it's unlimited in province calling and 500 minutes North America minutes for $35+tax Ever since I upgraded my router's firmware I haven't had one single problem. I called Vonage twice and both times I had a very polite Human answer my problem on the spot unlike others. Also with Vonage they include EVERY call feature there is. The other thing I like about Vonage is that all my Family and Friends can use Vonage Access and call me without them paying long distance fees. No one else seems to be able to do this for some reason.
