I have every reason to log nefarious attempts to access my system, especially since POP/IMAP are not secure on VMS, this is my lifeline to warn me when there is a sustained break in attempt so I can then go in an block that remote IP address. Lets discuss the *real* security problem we have here... I also see a lot of login attemts to SSH, FTP and other services. I do not have IMAP/POP port-forwarded so I do not see any attempts on those services. Anyway... Not in a single case have it been using a user that actualy does exist on a normal VMS system. Even less are they going to guess my passwords. So, appart from the wasted bandwith and process creations, what are the real security problems that you think you have to protect yourself against ? Of course it would be nice if all services used the intrusion services on VMS, but is this realy a *that* big problem ? Personaly I do not think so. Jan-Erik. Still running ssh on port 22??? Well, I could change port I guess, if I saw a need. Or if I saw a real security problem with port 22. I don't. I only see some wasted bandwith and process creations which I can live with.

one reason why CISCO bought them. As far as I'm concerned, the miniaturization of routers is no different than the miniaturization of modems. Both used to be big and expensive but now they are small and cheap. Sure you can't use a _link_Sys as a corporate firewall (would you use a motor cycle engine to run a car?) but they are good enough for many applications. Cisco 850/870 series routers are in the low price range and, for what one can do with one, I'd say the better deal than going with _link_sys. IOS configuration editing is *STILL* primitive but you can get better control with it than you ever will with a _link_Sys. I'm not a fan of the PIX, BTW. If you really want to do some firewal- ling, look for a used Juniper NetScreen. A 5-GT model should suffice if you're able to work a BEFSR41 into your work network. These boxes are now available used and refurbished in the low US$100-$300 range. For home use I've been running a _link_Sys WRT300 for the past couple of years. This little beast sports 4-direct connect ports along with wireless connections on 802.11-B, G, and N. It seems that every home entertainment product now comes with wireless or 10-_base_-T or both. Hi I have been trying to setup my tcpip network with very little success. I can get to my router but not out of it... what am I missing it seems so simple at work, but at home... not so much. I have comcast and opendns and it is a static IP address not DHCP Looks like you've got the answers you were looking for. The _link_ between your _link_Sys and your ISP takes care of itself. No need to be concerned there, unless there's login criteria to deal with (PPPoE, for example). Internally, there's a setting or two more that you may want to look into. Your _link_Sys should have a management interface using your browser. There should be a network status page somewhere (probably requires you to log into the router). From that page, note the IPs of the DNS servers that were provided to the _link_Sys by your ISP. Now, the _link_Sys can provide those to your local DHCP clients. For the Alpha(, VAX, I64, etc. with static IPs) you'll want to set those DNS servers in the configuration of the IP stack on your VMS(, etc.) machine(s). I use a Netgear router, myself and I have that set to provide the local IP address of my small Alpha to the local DHCP clients as the primary name server. The VMS machine's IP stack's (Multinet) resolver is configured to serve as the authoritative source for the home.djesys.com subdomain, and refer all other queries to the upline DNS servers provided by my ISP. For the Alpha(, VAX, I64, etc. with static IPs) you'll want to set those DNS servers in the configuration of the IP stack on your VMS(, etc.) machine(s). My VMS system simply have the IP of the local Zyxel router as DNS server. Works just fine, and my ISP can change DNS servers as much as they like, the Zyxel takes care of that. So again, what benefit is it to have the local VMS systems go directly the whole way to the ISP name servers ?
