Anyone out there who has given Telecom/TelstraClear the flick and changed over to broadband phone?  I'm looking at the plans, 2talk.co.nz looks fairly OK and there's Kiwi_link_....  Their plans are SO confusing, e.g. you have to look really hard  - and first of all you have to know that you need to find it out - to find whether friends in your local area can phone *you* without incurring charges as bad as using mobile phones.  They list FREE CALLING in big letters, then it turns out that it's free to call another person who has their phone with the same company - think mobile telescum/vodaphone charges for txt messaging. So please - what are other people's experiences?  I don't speak Geek, I hesitate to take this to nz.comp because there is scant chance that I'd understand the replies. I make a reasonable number of local calls and enjoy having a good long chat with friends.  Don't *need* to make toll calls often, but would dearly love to be able to so I can keep in touch with friends and family overseas and in far-flung parts of NZ - you know, more than 100km away   The reason I don't phone them is that it costs more than my budget will allow, not that I don't want to, and this is one of my reasons for wanting VOIP (Voice Over Internet Phone - for those who are even farther behind the times than I) - along with a deep and heart-felt desire to give Telecom the flick. A L P I use 2talk with an adapter that is for sale on trademe a Grandstream Handytone $60 with friendly instruction sheet for NZ users. I signed up for their free option then added a local number for $7. I stick $10 credit on with a credit card as and when required. At 3c per minute country wide it lasts for ages, UK calls are the same rate, Australia is 5c. I have family in other calling areas also on 2talk and they are free. My cellphone also does voip through my router when I'm at home.

Oh yeah, the $7 for the local number is a monthly cost,  includes 2000 minutes and means that incoming callers don't  pay the cost of the 028 call. I reckon its fair.

We had the Slingshot service for a while a couple of years ago for a 2nd business line. The quality was crap though - you sounded like you were in a toilet and during peak times it would cut off the end of your words, or have connection problems. We lasted about 6 months then sold the phone. Gay

Many thanks for both posts, Victor.  Clearly expressed enough for even me to understand!  Now to get in touch with them and find out if there is a way to set up payments without a credit card, because I don't have one.
